Your tarot deck absorbs energy from every reading. Over time, that accumulated energy can make readings feel cloudy, repetitive, or "off." Cleansing your deck resets it to a neutral state, so each reading starts fresh and clear.
There's no single "right" way to cleanse your cards. The best method is the one that feels meaningful to you. Here are six approaches I use and recommend.
1. Smoke Cleansing
Light a bundle of dried herbs (sage, rosemary, or palo santo are popular choices) and pass your deck through the smoke. The idea is that the smoke carries away stagnant energy. Fan the cards out so the smoke reaches all of them.
Best for: After heavy or emotional readings, or when the deck hasn't been used in a long time.
A note on cultural sensitivity: if you use sage, consider sourcing it ethically. Rosemary and lavender are excellent alternatives that grow easily in most climates.
2. Moonlight Charging
Place your deck on a windowsill or outdoor surface during a full moon and leave it overnight. The full moon's energy is associated with completion and release, making it ideal for clearing accumulated energy.
Best for: Monthly maintenance. Many readers make this a regular full moon ritual.
3. Knocking or Tapping
The simplest method: hold your deck in one hand and knock on it three times with the other fist. This physically disrupts the energy stored in the cards. It sounds too simple to work, but many experienced readers swear by it.
Best for: Quick cleansing between readings, especially when reading for multiple people in one session.
4. Salt Placement
Place your deck on a bed of salt (sea salt or Himalayan pink salt) overnight. Salt has been used for purification across cultures for thousands of years. Wrap your deck in a cloth first if you're concerned about the salt damaging the cards.
Best for: Deep cleansing after particularly intense readings or when you feel the deck's energy has become heavy.
5. Crystal Companions
Place a cleansing crystal on top of your deck when it's not in use. Clear quartz is the universal cleanser, but selenite and black tourmaline are also excellent choices. Selenite charges and purifies. Black tourmaline absorbs and neutralizes negative energy.
Best for: Ongoing maintenance between readings. This is passive cleansing that works in the background.
6. Sorting and Shuffling Reset
Put your entire deck back in order: Major Arcana 0-21, then each suit Ace through King. This returns the deck to its original state, like a factory reset. Then shuffle thoroughly with your intention set on clearing all previous readings.
Best for: When you feel the cards are "stuck" and the same cards keep appearing regardless of the question.
How Often Should You Cleanse Your Deck?
There are no strict rules, but consider cleansing:
- When you first get a new deck (to clear the energy of everyone who handled it before you)
- After reading for someone going through a difficult situation
- When your readings start feeling unclear or repetitive
- At the full moon each month as a regular practice
- Whenever it intuitively feels right
What About Storing Your Deck?
How you store your deck also affects its energy. Wrapping it in silk or keeping it in a wooden box helps protect the cards energetically. Some readers keep a crystal with their deck at all times. Others store it near herbs like lavender or rosemary.
The most important thing is treating your deck with respect. These cards are your tools. Take care of them, and they'll take care of your readings.
