Black Moon Tarot: Planting the Seed No One Sees Yet

A Black Moon is the second new moon to fall inside a single calendar month, and it is rare: the next one arrives on August 31, 2027. For tarot work, it is the most private night the sky offers, and the best one for setting an intention you tell absolutely no one.

That last part is the whole practice. So before we get to the spread, let me make the case for secrecy, because it goes against everything we are trained to do.

First, the Astronomy, Quickly

Most months hold exactly one new moon, the point in the cycle when the moon sits between Earth and the sun with its lit side turned away from us. We cannot see it at all. Every couple of years the timing lines up so one month squeezes in two new moons, and the second one gets the name Black Moon. No glow, no spotlight, nothing to photograph. The sky simply goes as dark as it ever gets.

A regular new moon is already the planting phase of the cycle, the blank page before a beginning. A Black Moon is that energy twice over: a second blank page inside the same month, handed to you under total darkness. Whatever you start here starts unseen. Most people hear that as a drawback; it is the gift.

Why I Tell Clients to Keep This One Secret

Here is a pattern I have watched for years in love readings. A woman decides something true: she is done going back to him, or she is finally going to want the big love instead of the convenient one. Keep it simple. Write your intention on a small piece of paper in as few words as you can manage. Do not photograph it. Do not share it. Do not explain it to anyone, including the people you love and trust, because this is not about trust. Fold it and put it somewhere genuinely dark: a tin, a drawer, the back of your closet.

Then live as if it is already growing.
