Blue Moon Tarot: The Rare Permission to Do the Unlikely Thing

We already have a phrase for the things we almost never let ourselves do. Once in a blue moon.

Here is what most people forget: the blue moon is real. It has a date. And when it comes around, I treat it as the sky scheduling an appointment with your courage.

What a Blue Moon Actually Is

Full moons arrive roughly every twenty nine and a half days, so most months hold exactly one. Every so often, the calendar and the moon drift out of step, and a single month manages to fit two full moons inside it. The second one is called a Blue Moon. The moon does not actually turn blue; the name is about rarity, not color. The next one rises on December 31, 2028, a Blue Moon on New Year's Eve, which might be the most poetic timing the sky has ever managed.

Because it is a full moon, a Blue Moon carries all the usual full moon energy: culmination, illumination, feelings at high tide. But its rarity adds a flavor all its own. This is the moon of the exception. The extra chance. The one more time that was not supposed to happen, happening anyway.

What It Means for Your Love Life

Every woman I read for carries a short list of unlikely things. Tell him how I actually feel. Leave the comfortable almost-relationship. Say yes to the man who is nothing like my type. Move to the new city. Start the thing. The list stays short because we prune it constantly with one word: unrealistic.

The Blue Moon exists to reopen that list. Its whole nature is proof that the calendar sometimes makes room for what was not supposed to fit. Twelve full moons is the rule, and yet here is a thirteenth, glowing away, uninvited and undeniable. If the sky can break its own pattern, so can you.

I am not telling you to be reckless. I am telling you that rare permission has a shelf life. The unlikely thing on your list has been waiting patiently, and unlikely does not mean wrong. It usually just means unguaranteed. Under a Blue Moon, especially one that closes out an entire year, the question is not will it work. The question is: if not under this moon, then when?

And because this particular Blue Moon falls on the last night of the year, it doubles as a threshold. You will be standing between two years with a rare moon overhead, and thresholds are where the honest wishes live. Most New Year's resolutions are about becoming smaller, tidier, more manageable. A Blue Moon wish is different. It is about the larger life you keep postponing. Let everyone else promise to drink more water. You are allowed to promise yourself the unlikely thing, and to write it down before midnight, in ink, where the old year can witness it.

• What have I labeled unrealistic that is really just unguaranteed?
• Which risk in love would I take if I knew I could survive the answer?
• What did I almost do this year, and what stopped me?
• Where has playing it safe quietly cost me more than a no ever would have?
• What would the once in a blue moon version of me do tonight?

My Blue Moon ritual has teeth, in the kindest way. Name your unlikely thing out loud, then do the smallest possible version of it within twenty four hours. Not the whole confession, the first sentence of it. Not the move, the browsing of the listing. Rare permission responds to motion. Give the moon something to work with.
