January is quiet in a particular way. The parties are over, the resolutions are already wobbling, and the nights are long enough to hear yourself think.
Into that quiet rises the first full moon of the year, and it asks the only question that actually matters in a new year: what are you hungry for?
What the Wolf Moon Actually Is
The Wolf Moon is the traditional name for January's full moon, the first full moon of the calendar year, named long ago for the wolves people heard howling through the deep winter nights. It returns every January. The next one rises on January 22, 2027, and it arrives with extra weight, because that same moon is also a supermoon, a full moon at its closest to Earth, so everything it stirs will be turned up. If you want the full story on that amplification, I wrote the supermoon guide for exactly this night.
I love the Wolf Moon because wolves do not make resolutions. They follow hunger. In the leanest month of the year, appetite is what carries them through the snow, and appetite does not lie. That is the medicine of this moon: not discipline, not reinvention, but honesty about what you actually want.
What It Means for Your Love Life
By late January, most resolutions have quietly died, and I think it is because most of them were never desires. They were apologies. Lose the weight, be less needy, want less, need less. The Wolf Moon flips the question. Instead of what should I fix, it asks what do I crave, and it treats your appetite as a compass instead of a problem.
In love, your hunger is data. If you are starving for consistency, that is your compass pointing away from the man who runs hot and cold. If what you crave is passion, admit that the safe, flat arrangement you are half inside is a diet you never chose. Wanting is not neediness. Wanting is navigation. The women I read for who end up with the love they want are not the ones who wanted less. They are the ones who finally named exactly what they were hungry for, and stopped snacking on substitutes.
The same goes beyond romance. Career, friendship, your own time, your own name on your own life: this moon shines on every appetite you have been calling too much. Let it. A year steered by real hunger goes somewhere. A year steered by shoulds goes in circles.
One caution, said with love: hunger is a compass, not an excuse. Naming a craving does not mean feeding it tonight, and it certainly does not mean texting him at midnight because the moon said so. It means letting the want inform your direction, your standards, and your next honest conversation. Wolves follow hunger with patience and strategy. Be that kind of hungry.
Reading about it helps. Hearing it about your situation helps more.
I'll pull the cards for your question and tell you what I see, gently. It's free.

This is my Hunger Spread: four cards for the first full moon of your year.
- 1. The Hunger I Admit: What do I openly want this year, the desire I would say out loud at dinner?
- 2. The Hunger I Hide: What appetite have I been ashamed or afraid to name, even to myself?
- 3. The Empty Calorie: What have I been feeding on that never actually fills me?
- 4. The Feast: What would truly nourish me in love and life this year, and where is it calling me from?
What to Ask the Cards
Take these to your journal on the night of the Wolf Moon, and answer without editing yourself.
- If no one would judge me, what would I admit I want this year?
- Where in my love life have I been settling for crumbs and calling it a meal?
- Which of my hungers scares me a little, and what is it really asking for?
- What did I chase last year that left me emptier than before?
- What one desire, fully fed, would change how this entire year feels?
My Wolf Moon ritual is a list. Sit down with paper, write the phrase I am hungry for, and complete it ten times, fast, without censoring. The first three answers will be polite. The last three will be true. Keep the list somewhere you will see it in February, when the shoulds try to move back in.
And if you want to see how those hungers actually play out across the year ahead, month by month, meeting by meeting, turning point by turning point, that is exactly what my Next 12 Months reading maps out for you. And for every full moon of the year, howl along with the full moon calendar.
